Dear Colleagues:

The 22nd Annual Academic Surgical Congress (ASC) will take place February 9–11, 2027, at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. We were incredibly proud of the outstanding 21st Annual ASC this past February, and its success was only possible because of your engagement and the exceptional work you submitted. We are excited to gather again next year to share new ideas, discoveries, and innovations in academic surgery. The continued growth and success of the ASC depend on your participation.

The ASC remains the premier forum for presenting and discussing the latest scientific advances across all disciplines of academic surgery. The strength of the meeting depends on the submission of high-quality, impactful work from our community. Presented research spans education, clinical outcomes, health services research, and basic and translational science. We are actively developing a program that will be engaging, thought-provoking, and inspiring from start to finish.

The ASC, jointly sponsored by the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) and the Society of University Surgeons (SUS), will accept abstract submissions through Friday, August 7, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. Please note that this deadline will not be extended. As in previous years, abstracts will be considered for presentation in either full oral or quick-shot oral format. Full oral presentations will consist of an 8-minute presentation followed by 4 minutes of discussion. Quick-shot presentations will consist of a 3-minute oral presentation, a maximum of 5 slides, and 2 minutes of discussion. Please note that case studies will not be accepted this year.

Given the record-breaking number of abstract submissions over the past several years, and in an effort to maximize participation in the ASC, we will continue to limit individual first authors to TWO presentations. There is no limit to the number of abstracts that may be submitted; however, if more than two abstracts are submitted by the same first author, only the two highest-scoring abstracts will be selected for presentation. There is no limit to the number of abstracts in which an individual may participate as a middle or senior author. Submitting the same research findings to multiple categories or dividing a single body of work into multiple abstracts (“salami slicing”) is strictly prohibited. Each abstract must represent a distinct and complete body of work. Submissions found to be duplicative or fragmented may be rejected or withdrawn.

Authors with abstracts accepted for presentation at the ASC are encouraged to submit full manuscripts to the Journal of Surgical Research (AAS) or Surgery (SUS). To be considered for AAS Awards, manuscripts must be submitted to the Journal of Surgical Research (JSR) by December 4, 2026. Authors should select ‘VSI: ASC 2027’ as the article type and include a reference to the ASC 2027 meeting in both the cover letter and immediately before the references section of the manuscript. Manuscripts not submitted for award consideration may still be submitted to the Journal of Surgical Research within one year of the ASC (submission deadline: February 11, 2028) or to Surgery by Friday, March 12, 2027, for special meeting-related consideration.

We hope each of you will make plans to join us in person in Washington, D.C., next year.

With very best wishes,

Lesly Dossett, MD, MPH
